General rules for domain names

There are several general rules for domain registrations. The rules are determined by the individual administrator (registry) and can therefore vary, but we will review the most common ones here.

• Special Characters (IDN) in Domains: Domains with special characters like æ, ø, å, ù, ö, ò, known as IDN, may not function properly without special characters. While these domains can be used for email, not all email clients support them, so it’s not advisable to use them.
• Country Code Limitations: It’s not possible to register domain names like dk.eu, pk.se, etc., combining country codes in this manner.
• Blocked Short Domains: Domain names with 1-2 characters are often blocked and cannot be registered, even if they appear available.
• Prohibited Combinations: It’s not allowed to register domain names with combinations like org.biz, com.biz, etc., even if they appear to be available.
• Hyphen Usage: Domains must not contain hyphens (-) as the 3rd and 4th characters, but preferably avoid them altogether.
• Avoid numbers and special characters: While you can use numbers and special characters, they often can make your domain name harder to remember and type. Stick to letters if possible.
